This project started as an assignment in a college course on video editing. The goal of the assignment was to take a movie that had a clear genre and edit it down into a trailer that completely flipped the genre. In this case, I took the dramatic "Whiplash" (2014) and reconceptualized it into a witty rom-com.
In doing this assignment, I learned how open to interpretation a scene can be. It is said that a movie is made three times: once by the script, then it is remade on set, and finally it is remade again in the editing room. Drama is rarely generated by dialogue alone, but instead by the subtext that lies beneath it. By twisting this subtext, I was able to fit it to a more light-hearted genre like a rom-com. I also kept the music narrative of the movie in this reimagining. Because of this, I emphasized cutting the trailer on beat with the background music.
Finally, I wanted to mention some of the technical aspects of this project. Aside from telling a convincing story, I wanted to enhance the feel of the trailer. I accomplished this by adding graphics to shots. This is something I've seen done on countless trailers, especially with reviews. I'm particularly proud of the shot on the right, where it looks as if J.K. Simmons is in front of the reviews.
